The idea of voucher codes came out of coupons that could be exchanged for some monetary relief while purchasing a product. The first documented voucher code to ever have been issued can be dated back to the end of the 1800s when Coca Cola came out with a document that entitled the holder to get a free coca cola drink in return for exchanging the coupon with a certified original seller of coca cola drinks. By the end of 1910, the company reported an amazing 8.5 million coupons redeemed meaning that they had spread their customer base over the entire United States.
The reason why the company had to take such a drastic step and issue coupons for free drinks was because people did not feel the need to spend extra on purchasing a flavored drink that was not healthy. In order to entice the public to spend money on their drinks the company had to come out with such codes.
